Body of missing Irish hiker found in Italy

Simon Kelly

The alarm was raised on Friday afternoon.

A body has been found in the search for a missing Irish hiker on the Italian island of Sardinia.

The 39-year-old man had been missing since he reportedly failed to return from a hike on the Cammino Minerario di Santa Barbara, between Masua and Cala Domestica, on Friday, September 6.

Outlets in Italy reported that a search dog had found the man’s body on the side of the Canale de Sa Rocca Niedda.

It is understood that the man was holidaying with his family and went on a hike with his brother before setting out by himself.

The alarm was raised shortly after and search teams were deployed across the weekend, which included dog units, drones and thermal imagery technology.

It was reported locally that a helicopter was used to recover the body.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has said that it is aware of the case and is providing consular assistance.
