Approximately 600,000 people have been advised not to consume the water in their homes.

On Monday night, a boil notice was issued for 600,000 people in Dublin, Kildare and Meath.

This meant that these 600,000 people were advised not to use the water in their homes for the second time in less than a month.

Since then, Niall Gleeson, Managing Director of Irish Water, has said that the boil notice could be in place for a “number of days”.

Speaking on Morning Ireland on Tuesday, Gleeson said that the “inconvenience” has occurred due to heavy rain, and complications at their plant.

He said that there is a connection between the issues that they are having in their Leixlip plant currently, and the issues that they had two weeks ago.

“We had a choice of either restricting water to customers and then we wouldn’t have had water for flushing toilets or having showers, or introducing this water where we had issues around the quality.”

When asked how long he expected this restriction to last, Gleeson said that it could remain in place for a number of days.

He then said that it could be in place until the weekend, and he apologised for any inconvenience caused, while asking the public to be patient.

People in affected areas have been told they must boil water used for drinking, the preparation of foods, brushing teeth and making ice.
