Boris Johnson has released his plan for a “better” Brexit, and it has one major issue

It’s never going to work.

In an critical article published before the Conservative Party conference, the former foreign secretary called on the prime minister to abandon the chequers plan and adopt a “Super Canada” style proposal instead.

He said there had been a “collective failure of government, and a collapse of will by the British establishment, to deliver on the mandate of the people”.

In his article in The Telegraph, he wrote about his plan for a better Brexit which basically said:

  • Theresa May should tell the EU that the Irish backstop is not workable
  • He said his vision would not lead to a hard Irish border, with any checks carried out away from the crossing.
  • And he wants to buy more time for a trade deal with the EU so wants the border issue to be pushed back to be dealt with alongside the trade deal.

He called for a new withdrawal agreement which states that the Irish border question will be settled as part of the deal on the future economic arrangements.

He wants to implement a “Super Canada” type free-trade agreement and says MPs should not give £40bn to the EU when Brexit occurs without any such agreement.

He said such a deal would involve UK and EU regulatory bodies ensuring conformity of goods with each other’s standards,  zero tariffs or quotas on imports and exports, and investment in technologies at border controls.

There’s just one problem with these demands, the EU and Ireland will never agree to them.
