A shooting has taken place at a high school in the Texas city of Santa Fe, CNN report.
Witnesses claim that a gunman walked into an art class at Santa Fe High School armed with a shotgun and began firing, with a girl shot in the leg.
Students have been evacuated from the school and the school district remains on lockdown, according to KTRK, the local ABC affiliate.
A junior at the school told CNN that students were participating in what they believed to be a fire evacuation when they began hearing shots.
“The teachers are telling us to stay put but we’re all just running away,” 14-year-old Angelica Martinez said.
Police cars were seen arriving at the scene and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives agents also responded to the incident.
Sherriff Ed Gonzalez took to Twitter to write “Shooting incident reported at Santa Fe High School in Galveston County. We have @HCSOTexas units en route to assist. Large police presence, please avoid the area.”

UPDATE: The New York Times has since reported that at least eight are dead, and that the shooter is in police custody.
