BSE cow in County Louth ‘was an isolated case’ – no other cows affected

Relief for the country's beef industry

Tony Cuddihy

The cow recently diagnosed with BSE in County Louth was an isolated case.

All of the animals that grew up with that cow were traced, slaughtered and then test for a disease that could have severe knock-on effects on humans – none were affected.

The Department of Agriculture revealed that a total of 67 animals had been tested, with the cow’s mother and grandmother also tested and given the all clear.

IFA President Eddie Downey said, “Consumers can be re-assured about the robustness of the food safety controls in place in Ireland.

“This and the high quality of Irish food has rightly reassured export markets from all over the world.”
