Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman has called on Israel to close down its embassy in Dublin.

Lieberman made the remarks in response to the Seanad’s decision this week to vote to boycott goods from Israeli settlements.

Speaking on an Israeli radio station, Lieberman said that the vote was “dangerous, extremist and anti-Israeli.” He went on to say that the bill would “harm the chances of establishing a dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians and would have a negative impact on the diplomatic process in the Middle East”.

Lieberman’s remarks were reported by Middle East Monitor.

The Control of Economic Activity (Occupied Territories) Bill 2o18, submitted by Senator Frances Black, passed with 25 votes for to 20 against.

It is expected that the bill will pass through committee stage and be voted on in Dáil Éireann, where it is opposed by Fine Gael.

Black celebrated the vote with the message “Passed! Thank you for all the messages of support.. this is a first step, but an important one. Today we state strongly: Ireland will always stand for int humanitarian law, justice & human rights. Onwards.”
