Chaos as Brexit Secretary David Davis resigns

Brexit Secretary David Davis, who has been leading the United Kingdom side of Brexit negotiations, resigned on Sunday night.

Davis had become unnerved by the Brexit plan agreed by Theresa May’s cabinet during the week. He expressed concerns that it was looking less and less likely that the UK would leave the customs union and single market.

Davis argued that this type of “soft Brexit approach” would leave the UK parliament in “at best a weak negotiating position”.

Theresa May has said that she does not agree with this characterisation.

Throughout his time as Brexit secretary, Davis made many gaffes — particularly in relation to Ireland. In one instance, he blamed Sinn Féin for Ireland’s stance on the border. He also at one point referred to the United Kingdom’s “internal border with southern Ireland,” which implies that he saw Ireland as part of the UK rather than part of the EU.

It was also Davis who shockingly admitted that there had been no impact assessments conducted in relation to what effect Brexit would have on Britain’s major industries.

Questions now surround Theresa May’s legitimacy as Prime Minister, and she has been heavily criticised by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, as well as Tory MP Jacob Rees-Mogg, whom many suspect is after her job.
