“I am not going to give in.”

Charlie Bird has shared a health update with his supportive followers.

The veteran journalist admitted that he is struggling with uncontrollable crying, which is a symptom of his motor neurone disease (MND).

The RTÉ broadcaster was diagnosed with the condition in 2021.

In his latest social media post, he told his followers that he is struggling, but that he will not “give in”.

Writing on Twitter, he stated: “I can’t hide anymore where ever I am in my journey.

“I am crying non-stop when I am out and about.

“I am not going to give in. I am going to keep fighting to extend the hand of friendship to people in dark places.

“But crying nonstop is so awful. A big hug for all the support.”

Earlier this month, the broadcaster shared some hopeful news with his followers.

Charlie confirmed that he will likely be able to maintain some of his mobility in the future.

He shared: “I want to thank everyone who has been praying for me. I got a bit of good news the other day.

“I have been told I may not end up totally immobile.

“Thank you all for your prayers. My heart goes out to all the MND patients who end up totally immobile.”

Fans of the journalist have praised him for being so open about living with the condition.

One wrote: “You have nothing to hide. Please don’t ever feel that people are judging you. I’m so sorry for what you’re going through. Please don’t make it harder on yourself by feeling you have to apologise for the very human experience you’re having. You are wonderful Charlie.”

Another added: “We are with you all the way, Charlie.”
