Charlie Bird says his MND is ‘changing fast’ in heartbreaking update

The beloved broadcaster still managed to end on a positive note.

Charlie Bird has revealed that he will soon need mobility assistance as his motor neurone disease progresses. The former broadcaster is always open about his health challenges over the years. Today, the 74-year-old gave his followers an update on X, formerly known as Twitter, which broke many hearts. “My MND is changing fast. I am now using a feeding tube and will soon have to use a mobility travelator to get out and about,” the post began but somehow Charlie still managed to end on a high note. “Also I am being honoured by the Murrisk Community. They are giving a permanent home to a stone to mark Climb With Charlie. Now Brent Pope’s project is my goal.”

Charlie Bird to be honoured for charity work

Now his incredible charity work is being honoured with a permanent marker in Murrisk, the village that lies at the base of the peak in county Mayo. Charlie revealed that he had set his sights on a new charity, with the broadcaster eager to help, named Elephant In The Room, a project organised by former rugby player Brent Pope, which aims to aid mental health charities. [caption id="attachment_745570" align="alignnone" width="640"] Rolling News[/caption] He finished his video by reaffirming the purpose of his current work and advocacy for charity and mental well-being. “All my efforts now will focus on extending the hand of friendship to people in dark places. I love you all,” he concluded, waving at the camera. The beloved broadcaster was diagnosed with MND back in 2021 and has never shied away from sharing his struggles with the illness, including issues with his voice.
