Claims that Pat Hickey tried to escape “ridiculous”, according to his lawyers

Carl Kinsella

Pat Hickey’s lawyers have released a statement branding claims that the OCI President Pat Hickey tried to evade capture by Rio police as “ridiculous.”

The statement argues that Hickey had been sleeping in one of the other three rooms booked to him as he’d had trouble sleeping in Brazil and did not want to disturb his wife.

Hickey was arrested last week in connection with the Rio Olympics ticketing scandal which involved the illegal sale of tickets to the games.

The passports of three other men have been confiscated, and the Rio police force are seeking to confiscate three more – including that of FAI President John Delaney.

Hickey is currently being held in Bangu maximum-security prison and, according to RTÉ, there has been no date set for his court appearance.

Hickey’s lawyers have refuted the claims against him, and have said that his arrest was provided for by absolutely no material evidence.
