College Green in Dublin to be pedestrianised for three days this summer

Thoughts?

College Green in Dublin is set to be be pedestrianised on a trial basis for three Sundays this summer.

Dublin City Council has announced the area will be closed to traffic on 21 July, 28 July and 4 August.

It's understood a number of family -riendly events will be organised in the city centre on these dates to encourage pedestrians in the area.

Dublin City Council previously put forward a plan for a €10 million traffic-free plaza which was rejected by An Bord Pleanála.

In a statement to JOE, Dublin Chamber welcomed the news and stated the majority of businesses are in favour of the move.

'The idea of trial days was one first put forward by Dublin Chamber in late 2018," Graeme McQueen of Dublin Chamber said.

"We’re pleased to see the Council taking the idea up. Trial days can help get more people and businesses on board with the idea - giving them a real chance to experience first hand what a plaza would be like.

"College Green is a really key space in the city, particularly from a transport point of view. It also boasts some stunning buildings, which at the moment we don’t get to fully appreciate due to how frantic the area is.

"The trial Sundays will give everyone a chance to pause and take it all in and really get a taste for what might be possible."
