Cork Fire Service responds to ”billowing smoke” in city centre

Cork City Fire Brigade are attending an incident on MacCurtain Street this morning.

Thick black smoke has been spotted billowing from the ground floor of a building on the city centre early Wednesday morning.

The building’s, located at 36/37 MacCurtain Street, overhead apartments have since been evacuated while the rest of the building is being searched. Several units of the Cork City Fire Services have gained entry to the building to investigate further.

The building is fronted by Love Story, a wedding store on the ground floor. The cause of the fire is believed to have occurred in the backroom of the boutique.

Locals are being asked to avoid the area and to expect traffic delays as the scene is currently closed off for forensic investigation, with the road down to one lane as reported by AA Roadwatch.

At time of writing, there are no injuries reported and all residents are safe and accounted for.
