Heavy continuous rain all day Thursday has already led to several road closures in the county.

50mm of rain is said to have fallen in Munster over the course of the day, and the worst is still to come.

The Cork County Council made the following statement in advance of Storm Brian’s arrival on Friday:

A tidal surge coinciding with high tides is expected to occur tomorrow evening, at 6.00pm approximately. This has the potential to cause to cause tidal flooding across low lying areas in Bantry, Clonakilty, Youghal and Midleton.

Cork County Council will have sand bags available at Council depots for these four areas from tomorrow morning.

In light of the imminent wind warning, Cork County Council asks members of the public to avoid coastal areas, exercise extreme caution in relation to the trees/structures that may have been affected by storm Ophelia.

We also request landowners to check trees on roadside boundaries which may have been affected by storm Ophelia and could pose a risk.

Additionally, Brittany Ferries announced that due to adverse weather conditions, all of their sailings between Roscoff and Cork tomorrow on Friday and Saturday have been cancelled.
