The Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) has reported that two more people have died and that there have been 264 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland on Monday (14 December).

Of the cases reported on Monday, there were:

  • 79 in Dublin

  • 19 in Kerry
  • 18 in Limerick
  • 14 in Kildare
  • 14 in Wexford
  • Remaining 96 cases are spread across 14 other counties

As of 2pm on Monday, 215 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, 33 of whom are in intensive care units (ICU). There have been 17 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

There has now been a total of 76,449 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and a total of 2,126 deaths related to Covid-19 in Ireland to date.

Speaking on Monday, Taoiseach Micheál Martin warned that further restrictions could be introduced in Ireland in January depending on Covid-19 case numbers over the Christmas period.

“You could very well be looking at some further restrictions in January,” Martin said.

Martin added that the most effective way to prevent a rise in cases and further restrictions “is our own personal behaviour and particularly over the Christmas period”.

“And if people will want to see their loved ones, their parents and their grandparents, it’s very important that, the next week, that we just reduce the number of social contacts that we have and just really mind ourselves.

“Because if we mind ourselves, we will mind those closest and dearest to us,” he added.
