A number of credit unions across the country are offering current accounts for the first time, which will include contactless cards.

Credit unions across Ireland have announced that they are set to launch current account services.

Members who choose to avail of the current account will now be able to use a Mastercard debit card with contactless payments.

They are launching plenty of different features for account holders, including standing orders, direct debits and an overdraft.

The move has been fully approved by the Central Bank.

A total of 30 credit unions with 115 branches nationwide follows the coming together of some of the country’s biggest credit unions to create a shared services company.

“For the first time, Credit Unions will be able to provide their members with a real choice for their day-to-day financial needs,” said Seamus Newcombe, Chief Executive of currentaccount.ie speaking to RTÉ.

“This new service, which will be accessible globally and digitally, will enable credit unions to become even more relevant to their members in our ever-increasingly digital world.”

Accounts can be opened in person at branches or online.
