The most dangerous drives in Ireland have been revealed

Conor Heneghan

Ever taken a spin on any of these?

Away from the motorways, dual carriageways and national routes in Ireland, there are roads in nearly every county that would test the motoring skills and the nerves of the most accomplished of drivers.

Some roads are just plain bad, but others are genuinely frightening due to the presence of bumps, dangerous corners, steep inclines and descents, and, occasionally, livestock.

The folks at Chill Insurance surveyed 650 people in Ireland in an attempt to determine the most dangerous drives in the country and it was routes in Clare, Wicklow and Kerry that proved to be the most daunting.

Been down any of these roads lately?

Cliffs of Moher, Clare

Cliffs of Moher, County Clare, Ireland, The Burren, Europe are one of Ireland's top touristic attractions. The maximum height of Cliffs is 214 m, lenght 8 km.

19% of people surveyed said that the road around one of the most famous natural landmarks in Ireland was the most dangerous in the country.

Recent landslides have made the cliff edges unstable and parts have collapsed. Cyclists are best advised to read the sign saying ‘Please don’t go beyond this point’.

Old Military Road, Wicklow

Windy corners and blind spots contributed to 13% of people surveyed voting for the Old Military Road as the country’s most dangerous.

Bogs in the area have caused the roads to sag, making conditions even more dangerous.

Gap of Dunloe, Kerry

Killarney National Parc - Gap of Dunloe - County Kerry

The narrow mountain pass is over 700 metres above sea level and there’s a strong chance you’ll run into a horse-drawn trap at some stage during your drive.

A popular tourist attraction, traffic can be congested at peak times and the bumps and tight hairpins don’t help either.
