The incident occurred late on Tuesday night.

A house in Derry has been targeted in a pipe bomb attack that marks the latest violent episode in Northern Ireland following a series of similar incidents in the past week.

The attack took place at around 11.15pm on Tuesday night in the Bann Drive area of the Waterside.

Two people, a man and a woman, were present in the house at the time.

Nobody was injured during the incident.

The area has been cordoned off by police and a number of homes were evacuated following the explosions.

As of Wednesday morning, residents have safely returned to their houses.

DUP MLA Gary Middleton took to Twitter to condemn the “disturbing” attack.

“Disturbing that an explosive device was thrown at a property in Bann Drive area of the Waterside last night,” he wrote.

“Homes were evacuated. Thankfully we are not dealing with injury or loss of life.

“These attacks must be condemned and I would encourage anyone with information to contact the PSNI.”

The attack marks the latest violent event during a period of considerable unrest in Northern Ireland.

Last Friday evening, the homes of prominent Sinn Féin figures Gerry Adams and Bobby Storey were targeted with explosive devices.

CCTV footage of that attack was later released via Sinn Féin.

Before that, explosive devices and petrol bombs were used against Derry police officers as violence unfolded across the week.

Superintendent Gordon McCalmont commented at the time:

“I am saddened, disheartened and frustrated that yet again police officers committed to keeping this local community safe have been attacked by a small number of people within it.”
