Donald Trump’s name won’t be mentioned on one Newstalk radio show for the duration of Lent

If giving up sweets or booze isn’t your thing, you might want to give this a go instead.

Today being Pancake Tuesday, Irish people make grand promises about making the ultimate sacrifice and giving up some of their favourite things for the next 40 days or so, often giving up on said promises by afternoon on Ash Wednesday.

In a novel move, Newstalk radio presenter Sean Moncrieff has decided to give up something completely different, announcing to listeners on Tuesday that he wasn’t going to mention Donald Trump until after Easter Sunday.

“I can’t express to you how difficult it’s going to be,” said Moncrieff, who thought that a 40-day ‘fast’ from the US President would do his listeners’ mental health a world of good.

“Every day, I wake up and it’s something new that Trump has said or done,” Moncrieff said.

It’s exhausting and mentally draining.”

“While we can’t ignore him completely, I am more than happy to leave the coverage to my colleagues, and create a Trump free zone for the entire Lenten fast.

“I know traditionally you are supposed to give up something you love during this time, but turfing Trump off the show will feel just as good.”

The move by Moncrieff was welcomed by his listeners, who suggested he should put a fiver into a Trócaire box if he happens to slip up.

It could be a long six weeks.
