A new drink drive limit in Ireland was recently introduced and is now in line with European levels.
According to drugsandalcohol.ie, the new Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) limit is 50 milligrams (mg) for all drivers, and 20mg for specified drivers, defined as learner or newly qualified drivers (for a period of two years after passing their driving test) or professional drivers (of buses, goods vehicles and public service vehicles).
The punishment for being this much over the limit is a €400 fine and a disqualification from holding a licence for up to three years.
The severity of the punishment can be far greater if the driver in question has offended before.
