Worth downloading if you’ll be out in town over Christmas.

The National Transport Authority (NTA) is encouraging those who’ll be out on the town over the next few weeks to download a new taxi safety app which aims to prevent illegitimate taxi drivers from scamming people out of money.

The app, entitled Driver Check App, allows passengers to make sure the vehicle they’re travelling in has been registered and that the driver is properly licensed. It also covers all bases as it applies to licensed taxis, hackneys and limousines.

A spokesperson for the NTA said: “With the Christmas season upon us, whether people are shopping, socialising or working, travelling by taxi is a safe, convenient and reliable option.”

They added: “Our Driver Check App covers licensed taxis, hackneys and limos. It is a handy tool that ensures your safety and comfort when hiring a driver or vehicle. There is also the facility to email a friend with trip details.”

“This app allows users to verify that the vehicle that they are about to hire has been correctly registered with NTA. and that the driver is properly licenced to operate that vehicle.”

“This service clearly protects passengers, but it also protects the interests of the majority of operators who are in full compliance with the SPSV licencing regulations”, the NTA says.

The app can be downloaded on both iTunes and Google Play Store.
