Early polls announce winner of the first round of French presidential election

Rory Cashin

There has been a bit of a mirror image situation going on with the current French presidential election and the most recent American presidential election.

As John Oliver pointed out in a recent episode of Last Week Tonight, the future of the French presidential race goes hand in hand with the future of Europe as we know it.

Essentially, depending on who wins the election, France may or may not decide to remain a part of the EU, and if France leave, then that’s pretty much it for the EU entirely.

However, out of the eleven people currently standing in contest to replace Francois Hollande, early projections have Emmanuel Macron (very much pro-EU) as the winner of the first round of the French presidential election.

In second place is far-right Front National leader Marine Le Pen (who, according to Oliver in that video we mentioned earlier, has more than a few similarities to Trump), which means she and Macron alone will go through to the head-to-head second round on 7 May.

These are still just early polling numbers, with the official result not expected to be announced until late Sunday night.

More to follow.
