A fifth arrest has been made.

A man has been arrested in Dublin in relation to the deaths of 39 people who were found in a lorry in Essex.

Gardaí arrested a man in his 20s at Dublin Port on Saturday afternoon.

The man is believed to be from Northern Ireland, and appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice at 4.30pm.

Gardaí also said that they will continue to assist Essex Police as part of the ongoing investigation.

An identification process is currently underway, in an attempt to learn the nationalities of those who died.

Senior Identification Manager Detective Chief Inspector Martin Pasmore said:

“We are working hard to understand how the 39 victims of this tragic incident have died and to identify all those involved.

“We remain open minded as to nationalities of those who have died. We are asking anyone who may have information that may assist us in identification to come forward to us.
