That’s Gas! Five-year-old boy’s parents receive invoice after he fails to show up at friend’s birthday party

He should’ve sent a card

Children’s birthday parties are apparently a very serious business these days.

We tend to leave the business of dispensing parenting advice to our sisters over at HerFamily.ie but we can say with a degree of certainty that a mother involved in the following tale would want to take a long, hard look at herself.

Derek Nash and Tanya Walsh were a little taken aback recently when their five-year old son Alex came home from nursery with a brown envelope in his bag that had been sent to them by Julie Lawrence, the mother of one of Alex’s classmates.

The envelope contained an invoice for £15.95 which Lawrence was charging Alex’s parents for his no-show at her son’s birthday party at a ski slope and snowboard centre in Plymouth before Christmas.

Alex had originally planned on attending the party and Derek and Tanya confirmed that he would be there, until they realised he was due to visit his grandparents on the same day. They were unable to find the invite to contact Lawrence to inform her of Alex’s non-attendance on the day.

Having looked at the invoice, which contained detailed charges and Lawrence’s bank details, Derek Nash visited her and informed her he would not be paying the money. He was then told he would be taken to the small claims court for his refusal to do so.

Speaking to Apex News, Derek Nash said: “It was a proper invoice with full official details and even her bank details on it.

“I can understand that she’s upset about losing money. The money isn’t the issue, it’s the way she went about trying to get the money from me.”

“She didn’t treat me like a human being.”

Lawrence, for her part, released a brief statement which read: “All details were on the party invite. They had every detail needed to contact me.”

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news Julie, but you may have just ensured that your poor son’s birthday parties are going to be very sparsely attended in future if this is how you’re going to carry on.

Some people, eh?
