Footage shows the terrifying moment a cruise ship crashed into a tourist boat in Venice injuring at least five people

People are seen running away in panic in the shocking video.

Footage posted to social media has shown the terrifying moment that a cruise ship attempting to dock in Venice smashed into a tourist boat, injuring at least five people.

Italian police confirmed that the MSC Opera crashed into the Giudecca Canal, which leads to Saint Mark’s Square, at around 8.30am on Sunday morning.

In a video of the incident, the cruise ship ploughs into the riverboat and the dock, with the crowd forced to flee.

Venice, famous for its canals, is a hotspot for tourists with many cruise ships docking over the summer. The city recently announced it would be introducing a tourist tax from September this year, in a bid to reduce overcrowding.
