William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavane went missing in 2015.

An Englishman in his 50s has been arrested in Meath as part of an investigation into the murder of William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavane five years ago.

The man was arrested by Garda detectives investigating the activities of an organised crime grouping based in the Louth/Meath area.

One of the offences under investigation was the murders of William Maughan and Anastasija Varslavane, a couple who went missing in 2015 having last been seen in Meath. Gardaí believe that they were murdered.

On Tuesday morning (28 April), Garda detectives, alongside the Serious Crime Review Team and the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, carried out the arrest of an Englishman in his 50s, who is now detained under the provisions of Section 50 Criminal Justice Act 2007 at Ashbourne Garda station.

This section of the statute book deals with various firearms offences. He can be detained for up to seven days.

As well as the murders of Maughan and Varslavane, the discovery of firearms in Gormanston in January of this year and the discovery of a large quantity of ammunition found in Gormanstown last week are also under investigation.
