Certain members of the Gardaí won’t be able to use their sires & lights or excessive speed from July 1, unless they’ve completed a special driving course called the ‘CBD2’.

The new move will mean that only Gardaí who have completed the CBD2 training course will be able to exceed the speed limit or use sirens and flashing lights during an emergency.

“You couldn’t make it up. Gardaí who have not completed this driving course face getting penalty points and prosecutions if they exceed the speed limit,” one source told the Herald.

According to the Irish Independent, Gardaí have “traditionally had the ‘chiefs permission’ to use lights, sirens and speed to pursue criminals or get to crime scenes quickly”, however, that won’t be the case as of July 1.

Representative groups for members of An Garda Siochana have said that the roll-out of the CBD2 training course has been slow, which means that there will be a lot of Gardaí who will have to adhere to the new rules.
