Naas Roads Policing arrested a driver this weekend after they were detected driving more than twice the 80km/h speed limit on the R402.

The speeding was so severe that it has entered the rankings for the largest breaches of the speed limit seen so far this year.

Two months ago, Gardaí revealed the five worst speeding offences for 2018 so far, relative to the speed limit.

  1.  139km/h in a 50 km/h zone – R689 Gortnahoo, Thurles, Tipperary
  2.  131 km/h in a 60 km/h zone – R563 Faha East, Faha, Kerry
  3. 198 km/h in a 80 km/h zone – R397 Knockagowny, Longford
  4.  201 km/h in a 100 km/h zone – N3 Daggan, Cavan
  5. 177 km/h in a 120 km/h zone – M7, Oberstown, Naas, Kildare

This latest offence, 171 km/h in a 80 km/h zone now takes the third spot.

The Gardaí noted that on conviction the driver could face a two-year driving ban.
