Gardaí stop tractor on the motorway for going too slow

Tractor on Motorway

Against the law.

Gardaí in Clare stopped a tractor on Monday for driving too slowly on the motorway.

The farmer was taking a shortcut between their land by travelling via the motorway but unfortunately for the driver, their tractor wasn’t able to do the 50km/h speed limit required to travel on the motorway.

The farmer was driving a John Deere that can only go 35km/h.

It should be noted that tractors are permitted to drive on the motorway provided they can travel 50km/h, and each tractor is fitted with a speed disc which indicates what speed it can do.

For those of you looking to brush up on the rules of the road, you may not enter a motorway if:

  • you are a learner driver or do not hold a full licence for the category of vehicle you are driving
  • your vehicle cannot travel or maintain a speed of at least 50km per hour;
  • your vehicle has an engine capacity of 50cc or less;
  • you drive a tractor that cannot travel at or maintain a speed of at least 50km/h
  • your vehicle does not use in ated tyres;
  • you are walking, cycling or moving animals;
  • you drive a motorised wheelchair (also known as an invalid carriage).
