Gatwick Airport drone arrests

Sussex police released a statement on Saturday morning.

Two people have been arrested following chaotic scenes that took place at Gatwick Airport in London during the week.

Flights were delayed, services disrupted and the airport itself shut down for some time after drone activity was discovered in the airspace on Wednesday night.

Over 100,000 people were affected when hundreds of flights were grounded from Wednesday night until early on Friday.

Operations were then further suspended on Friday evening as a precautionary measure due to a suspected drone sighting, as military equipment was deployed.

In a statement issued in the early hours of Saturday morning, Sussex police confirmed the arrest of two individuals.

The gender and age of those arrested has yet to be officially disclosed.

“As part of our ongoing investigations into the criminal use of drones which has severely disrupted flights in and out of Gatwick Airport, Sussex Police made two arrests just after 10pm on 21 December,” said Superintendent James Collis.

“Our investigations are still ongoing and our activities at the airport continue to build resilience to detect and mitigate further incursions from drones, by deploying a range of tactics,” he continued.

Collis hailed the arrests as “a result of our determination to keep the public safe from harm” and that his team will avail of any line of enquiry in “bringing those responsible to justice”.
