The ‘God’ Facebook account has been controversially unverified and people are not happy about it

The account has well in excess of three million likes on Facebook.

A popular Facebook page under the name of ‘God’ was unverified on Facebook on Wednesday, with the account claiming that it was due to posts about the shooting that occurred in Quebec in Canada over the weekend.

A humorous account that quickly attracted a huge following the world over, God (@TheGoodLordAbove) has been a verified account for a number of years after a petition to verify it back in 2014 attracted over 35,000 signatures.

On Wednesday, a post from the account claimed it had been unverified because Donald Trump supporters were offended by suggestions that the man responsible for the shooting in Quebec wasn’t a Muslim.

Those claims appear to relate to a number of posts earlier this week, such as a link back to a VICE article below, which remain on the Facebook page and are thereby not in violation of Facebook’s community standards.

According to Buzzfeed, the claims made on the page come shortly after Facebook faced criticism for content removals and page bans, following on from their recent commitment to clamp down on fake news in users’ news feeds.

A number of Facebook users have called for God’s verification to be restored immediately, with many tagging Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg himself in the comments, which can be seen on the page here.
