Government set to sign off on removing most remaining Covid restrictions

A change to mask wearing rules is expected from next week.

The Government is expected to sign off on removing most of the remaining Covid-19 restrictions in Ireland from next week, according to reports.

It comes after the latest advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) last week, which included recommendations that mandated mask wearing no longer be required in public transport, schools and shops.

Speaking on Friday about the recommendations, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the Government would be accepting the advice of NPHET in its entirety.

Following this, multiple reports now state that the leaders of the three Government parties agreed on Monday to accept NPHET’s advice and that Cabinet is set to sign off on the plans later on Tuesday (22 February).

If this goes ahead as expected, it is said that the changes will take effect from next Monday (28 February).

As part of the plans, face coverings would still be required in healthcare settings.

Meanwhile, the public would continue to be advised to wear masks on public transport, despite this no longer being mandatory.

Other Covid measures set to be removed from next week include physical distancing measures in schools.
