You might never need to go to the office again…

More than half of Irish workers say they will only consider jobs that offer flexible working, or to work from home permanently.

The findings were published on Tuesday (14 December) from Indeed’s latest Job Search Survey.

18% of respondents said they would only apply for jobs that provide remote working, and a further 38% said they would only consider jobs that would allow a hybrid or flexible approach.

Nearly two thirds of workers had changed their views in what they expected from an employer due to the Covid pandemic.

Top priorities for respondents were clear health and safety guidelines in regards to public health issues (52%), working at least 2 or more days from home as an option (49%), and more team-building opportunities (26%).

40% of workers surveyed said they would require a pay bump of 20% plus to consider moving jobs, with a further 31% saying they would need a bump of 10% to consider moving.

Salaries are continuing to rise in Ireland, with wages in tech seeing growth of over 20% since last year.

Only 4% of respondents are actively and urgently searching for a new role, despite the level of job postings on Indeed being up 53% of its pre-pandemic levels.

Respondents cited caring for children or elderly relatives (30%), having a financial cushion in place to delay the need (22%), and concerns about workplace safety due to Covid (18%) as reasons for a lack of urgency to switch jobs.

“There is little doubt that the pandemic will have a lasting impact on the world of work, with opportunities for flexible working or working from home now widely expected from employees,” Pawel Adrjan, Head of EMEA Research at Indeed said.

“In a tight labour market employers looking to fill roles will likely need to think about how they can tailor opportunities to meet these expectations.

“Against a backdrop of inflation and rising labour costs it is clear that many workers expect generous pay increases to tempt them to change roles.”
