With weather warnings in place, here’s what the weekend weather is going to look like

Paul Moore

Weather

Temperatures will drop to -2C.

A cold weekend awaits for most of the country over the coming days, with some counties set to endure plenty of rain to go with the low temperatures.

As of early on Friday morning, a status yellow rainfall warning came into effect for Cork and Waterford, a warning that will remain in place until 2am on Saturday morning.

For these two counties, frequent showers merging to longer spells of rain at times are expected while the warning is in place. This will lead to accumulations of 25 to 35mm in some parts, particularly near the south coast.

As for the rest of the country, patchy frost should clear by early on Friday morning. It will be mostly cloudy on Friday across the southern half of the country, with scattered outbreaks of rain, heavy and persistent at times across southern counties, with the risk of spot flooding and local thunder.

There will be some bright or sunny spells across the northern half of the country, where it should remain largely dry. Easterly breezes will be brisk at times along south and southeast coasts, and mainly moderate inland.

Friday night will see scattered outbreaks of rain but they’ll soon become confined to the southwest, with a few showers possible in the east later.

Otherwise, there will be a lot of dry weather with mist or fog patches, and patchy frost developing where skies stay clear.

As for Saturday, much of the country will see a fully dry day with sunny spells, however, some showery rain may affect southern and eastern coastal counties, mainly appearing along the coast.

Apart from isolated showers in the east, Saturday night will be dry with clear spells, in light northeast breezes. It will be cold and frosty in parts, with lowest temperatures of -2 to + 3 degrees, coldest across Atlantic coastal counties.

Finally, Sunday morning will see some frost across Atlantic coastal counties to begin to form. Many areas will stay dry for the day with good sunny spells, however, some scattered showers will occur too, with most of these feeding in across the east of Leinster.

A frosty night is set to follow with lowest temperatures of -2 and +2 degrees.
