There was only one story going to dominate the front pages of newspapers worldwide this morning as it will, no doubt, for days to come.

It’s only once in a while that an event or an incident has such a profound impact worldwide as the death of Nelson Mandela had last night and, as you would expect, his face dominated the front page of newspapers worldwide this morning.

At home, the headline ‘Icon of all icons’ accompanied a picture of a smiling Mandela, while The Star called the former South African President ‘A Prophet for Peace’.

Across the water, the Daily Mail went with the headline ‘Death of a colossus’ while the front page of The Scotsman read ‘A light goes out as Mandela dies at 95’.

Further afield, you may have already seen the sublime cover of the New Yorker featured on the site last night, USA Today ran with the headline ‘Death of a Giant,’ while in his homeland of South Africa, the Sowetan front page read ‘Goodbye Tata’ and the words ‘Nation Mourns’ adorned the front cover of the Pretoria News.

Of all the Mandela tributes, perhaps none were as touching and as heartfelt as the beautiful cartoon below by Peter Brookes in The Times.

RIP Madiba, the world will never see your like again.
