Irish Rail want anyone who recognises the car to contact Gardaí.
Trains between Athlone and Westport are operating with delays on Sunday after a car crashed through a barrier at Knochcroghery in Roscommon.
The driver crashed through the barrier before fleeing the scene.
Irish Rail called the actions “dangerous and reckless” as a train was approaching and had already been cleared to pass through the crossing.
Damage was caused to the barrier in the incident as the car drive through it.
A video, shared by Irish Rail in an appeal to find the driver, shows the car driving through the barrier before stopping, turning and driving back through the barrier it damaged.
Trains on the line are currently operating at a 40 minute delay.
