Summer not over just yet as Irish weather set for major U-turn

Simon Kelly

Put the woolly hat back in the wardrobe.

We might have thought we saw the last of the summer sun for another year, but luckily we may have one more week of good weather left.

Temperatures plunged to low single figures over the past week as an Arctic chill took over the country, but the weather is set to bounce back in the coming week.

Met Éireann’s forecast for the week ahead looks very promising, saying it will be “warm and largely dry with bright or sunny spells and temperatures in the high teens to low 20s”.

Today (Sunday, September 15) started with some patchy rain and drizzle, the rest of the day is set for nationwide sunshine, with highest temperatures of 15 to 19 degrees.

Here’s what Met Éireann’s weather forecast for the week ahead says

Monday, September 16
Monday will be largely dry with sunny spells, the best of these over the eastern half of the country.

It’ll become a little cloudier further west, with perhaps the odd spot of drizzle at times along the west coast.

Quite warm with highest temperatures of 17 to 21 degrees and mostly light southeast to south breezes.

Monday night will be largely dry with clear spells in many areas. It will be somewhat cloudier in parts of the west and northwest with perhaps one or two spots of drizzle.

Lowest temperatures ranging from 8 degrees in the southeast to 13 or 14 degrees in the northwest with light southerly or variable breezes.

Tuesday (September 17) to Friday (September 20)
The rest of the week days will all be largely dry with bright or sunny spells and highest temperatures of 17 to 21 or 22 degrees.

Light to moderate east to southeast winds will mean that it will be coolest in the east and warmest in the midlands and west.

Weekly nights forecast
The overnight forecast for the week will be dry with clear spells and some patches of mist or fog possible.

Lowest temperatures will range from about 7 to 11 degrees.

Next weekend
Current indications suggest that there will be a greater possibility of showers next weekend with temperatures dropping back to the mid to high teens.
