Israel orders closure of Dublin embassy

They’ve blamed the ‘extreme anti-Israel policy of the Irish government’.

Israel’s foreign minister has ordered the closure of the country’s embassy in Dublin, blaming the Irish government’s ‘extreme anti-Israel policy’.

Gideon Sa’ar said the decision comes as a result of ‘the extreme anti-Israel policies of the Irish government’.

He further said that ‘Ireland has crossed every red line in its relations with Israel’.

In a statement, he continued: “The actions and antisemitic rhetoric used by Ireland against Israel are rooted in the delegitimisation and demonisation of the Jewish state, along with double standards.”

The minister highlighted Ireland’s decision earlier this year to recognise Palestine as a state, after which Israel recalled its ambassador from Dublin.

Additionally, the decision comes after the Tánaiste announced that government approval had been secured for Ireland to intervene in South Africa’s International Court of Justice case against Israel under the Genocide Convention.

The Tánaiste stated: “There has been a collective punishment of the Palestinian people through the intent and impact of military actions of Israel in Gaza, leaving 44,000 dead and millions of civilians displaced.

Israel has instead decided to ‘adjust Israel’s diplomatic network of missions’ to strengthen ties with countries that want to do the same with Israel, but do not yet have an embassy.

In light of this, Mr Sa’ar said Israel will open an embassy in Moldova, and has instructed officials to find a suitable building to initiate the process of appointing an ambassador.

Taoiseach Simon Harris took to X to share his feelings on the decision, saying he ‘utterly reject the assertion that Ireland is anti-Israel’.

“Ireland is pro-peace, pro-human rights and pro-International law.

“Ireland wants a two-state solution and for Israel and Palestine to live in peace and security. Ireland will always speak up for human rights and international law. Nothing will distract from that,” he wrote.
