His family confirmed the news on Friday.
Former Presidential nominee John McCain has decided to stop treatment for a type of cancer that he has been battling for over 12 months.
His family announced the news on a statement on Friday.
Those close to McCain had been preparing themselves for bad news for a number of months, as the 81-year-old Republican had completely shied away from his public life to focus on his health.
The McCain family said in a statement that: "Last summer, Senator John McCain shared with Americans the news our family already knew: he had been diagnosed with an aggressive glioblastoma, and the prognosis was serious. In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival."
"But the progress of the disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment".
His daughter Meghan took to Twitter to post the statement.
