Judge orders Brendan Dassey be released from prison

Big news this evening.

A US judge has ordered that Making a Murderer subject Brendan Dassey be released from prison, under supervision, pending further court developments according to NBC Chicago.

“It is therefore ordered that Dassey’s motion for release…is granted,” part of the ruling released Monday reads.

Dassey, 27, has been in prison since being sentenced to life in 2007 for the murder of Teresa Halbach in 2005.

Steven Avery, his uncle, also is serving a life sentence in the Manitowoc County murder.

He imposed several conditions on Dassey including that he can only travel in the court’s Eastern District of Wisconsin, not obtain a passport, not possess a gun or any other weapons, or possess any controlled substances.

Dassey looks like he will be released immediately according to an American attorney who worked on the case, Kathleen Zellner. She stated that he will return to his family today.

Under the order of U.S. District Judge William Duffin, Dassey would be supervised by the U.S. Probation Office.

Earlier this year, a judge ruled that Dassey’s conviction should be thrown out. The state has appealed that ruling, and Dassey’s conviction could be reinstated by the state either winning that appeal or taking the case to a full retrial.
