Two girls have reportedly been left with ‘potentially life-changing injuries’ after the incident overnight.
An 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving after four pedestrians were hit by a car outside a nightclub in Newport, South Wales at around 5.30am on Sunday morning.
Footage has emerged from the incident that shows the driver speeding through a terrified crowd on Cambrian Road in the centre of the city.
In the video, the car is seen being repeatedly driven into a crowd as screams are heard. The vehicle is seen driving forward twice as people attempt to stop it by hitting the windscreen and driver’s window.
A witness described to Wales Online that the car initially hit a person, with on-lookers turning into a ‘mob’ who went ‘after the vehicle and the driver of the vehicle’.
They added that the driver then went across the pavement and hit two girls sat on the floor before then reversing back and hitting one of them a second time.
A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said: “Following the incident this morning on Cambrian Road in Newport involving a car and four pedestrians, an 18-year-old man from the Newport area has been arrested on suspicion of causing injury by dangerous driving.
“Investigations are ongoing and we’d like to thank everyone for their comments and shares.
“All of those injured have been taken to hospital for treatment.
“Their conditions are currently being assessed but it’s believed that two of the girls have received potentially life-changing injuries.”
Superintendent Glyn Fernquest said: “This is a shocking incident for everyone involved.
“I’d like to just reassure the public that this incident is not believed to be terror-related and has no links to the Newport marathon that is taking place this morning.”
