A man has died and a child has been left injured following a shooting in a shopping centre.
The incident occurred just after 6pm yesterday evening (June 1) in the Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow.
Shots were fired around 6.15pm in the centres Tesco store.
The man's wounds are understood to be self-inflicted.
A young girl sustained minor injuries in the incident.
She was attended to at the scene by ambulance and went home with family members.
Gardaí have said it remains unclear as to how the girl's injuries were sustained.
Police, ambulance, and fire services were at the scene, as well as a helicopter hovering overhead.
The Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team was also at the scene as a precaution.
The scene currently remains sealed off.
Taoiseach Micheál Martin took to X to say he was 'deeply shocked and saddened' by the incident.
"My thoughts are with the families affected and the local community in Carlow after what was a very serious and traumatic incident.
"I urge anyone who has information to speak to the gardaí."
Gardaí have urged anyone who may have footage of the incident not to share it on social media platforms or messaging apps, but to provide it to gardaí at Carlow Garda Station.
