Man dies in Antrim after car hit by falling tree during Storm Arwen

A man has died after the car he was driving was hit by a falling tree in Antrim.

The incident occurred on Friday (26 November) on the Dublin Road as a Status Yellow wind warning remains in place for all of Northern Ireland due to Storm Arwen.

The alert from the UK Met Office says that high winds may cause some travel disruption and damage and is valid from 9am on Friday to 6pm on Saturday.

In a statement to JOE, the PSNI said that the Dublin Road remains closed in both directions at this time and diversions are in place.

Met Éireann has also issued two Status Yellow wind warnings for the Republic of Ireland.

The first applies to Donegal and is in effect from 12pm on Friday to 6am on Saturday morning.

The second is for Mayo and Sligo and is valid from 3pm on Friday to 5am the next day.

Both warnings state that through Friday afternoon, evening and night, northerly winds will reach a mean speed of 45 to 65 km/h with gusts of 90 to 110 km/h.

However, Donegal will see significantly higher gusts at times along north-facing coasts and on the Inishowen Peninsula.
