Very sad news.

Maureen Haughey, wife of the late former Taoiseach Charlie Haughey, has died aged 91.

The sad news was announced by Maureen’s son Sean, Fianna Fáil TD for Dublin Bay North, early on Friday morning.

The daughter of another former Taoiseach, Sean Lemass, Maureen is survived by her four children, Ciaran, Conor, Eimear and Sean.

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin issued the following statement paying tribute to her on Friday morning.

“On behalf of the entire Fianna Fáil organisation across the country, I want to extend our deepest sympathies to the Haughey and Lemass families on the passing of Maureen Haughey.

“As the wife of the late Charles Haughey and daughter of Seán Lemass, Maureen was a wonderfully warm, dignified and intelligent woman. She was a tower of strength to her late husband former Taoiseach Charles Haughey and loving daughter of former Taoiseach Seán Lemass. Throughout her distinguished life she witnessed some of the major turning points in Irish history.

“Maureen was a very active woman and kept a keen interest in the evolution of Irish society. She was a patriot who loved her country and retained a key interest in the development of Irish society. I knew Maureen personally for many years and I enjoyed her company whenever we met. She was very knowledgeable, wise and engaging.

“At the launch of the Fianna Fáil 1916 commemorations at the RCSI over a year ago she made a poignant contribution recalling her late father’s heroic role in the 1916 Rising and subsequent War of Independence.

“Maureen was particularly pleased to witness her son Seán’s re-election to Dáil Éireann during last year’s General Election.

“Her life was steeped in the cause of Irish republicanism and her family contributed significantly to its advancement. She was a loving and caring mother and our sympathies go to her family, Eimear, Conor, Ciaran, and Seán.

“Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a hanam dhílis.”
