A level 3 alert for flooding has been issued in Mayo following heavy rain in the county on Monday and Tuesday.

Mayo County Council issued a level 3 alert for flooding in Crossmolina on Tuesday due to the weather conditions and the high water levels in the River Deel.

Mayo County Council also confirmed that the R312 road between Castlebar and Bangor remains closed on Tuesday evening, as sections of the road are still impassable due to flooding. There was also flooding on the R312 between Glenisland and Bellacorick on Tuesday afternoon.

Regular updates will be posted to the Mayo County Council Twitter page here.

News of the flood alert comes on the same day that the council warned people about the dangers of not looking after trampolines in stormy weather ahead of a forecast for inclement conditions later this week.

While Mayo has had the worst of the weather so far, Met Éireann warned that the weather could get drastically worse for the rest of the country as the week goes on.

The following weather advisory was issued on Tuesday afternoon: “A spell of wet and very windy, possibly stormy, weather is expected on Thursday night/ Friday morning as a deep depression tracks Northwards to the West of Ireland. There is the risk of coastal flooding due to high tides and surge.”
