Meath Garda station evacuated after elderly woman brings in artillery shell

This is one shell of a story.

This is one shell of a story.

Trim Garda station in Meath was evacuated last night after an elderly member of the public handed in a 100-year-old artillery shell she found in her shed.

The explosive device was quickly moved outside to the car park by Gardaí but the station was still evacuated and the street was closed as the Army Bomb Disposal unit was called to make the device safe.

The woman found the shell while she was clearing out her shed and it is believed that she knew she had the device but had forgotten about it until she discovered it in during clear out.

We often forget to put the milk back in the fridge after ourselves or leave the seat up regularly during our travels to the throne, but we can honestly say we would have a hard time forgetting we had a World War I era bomb sitting in our shed at home.

According to Commandant Sean O’Fatharta from the Defence Forces Press Office, the device was “quite degraded and corroded” and the risk of detonation was “probably slim”.

He continued to state; “If you come across any device and you have any concerns, don’t move it and contact the Gardaí immediately.”

Thankfully nobody was hurt in this incident. Stay safe while clearing out your garden sheds, you never know what you might stumble across.
