Met Éireann extend the status orange weather warning to 17 counties for Storm Ali

Four more counties are on alert.

Met Éireann have updated their weather warning that was issued this morning. At present, there are wind warnings for Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Cavan, Monaghan, Donegal, Dublin, Kildare, Longford, Louth, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Clare and Kerry.

The updated warning was issued at 4pm on Tuesday and is active from 5am on Wednesday until 1pm on the same afternoon.

The latest update states: “Storm Ali will track close to the west and northwest coast from the early hours of Wednesday morning. South to southwest winds veering westerly will increase to mean speeds between 65 and 80 km/h with gusts between 110 and 120 km/h for a time. The core of strong winds will be along Atlantic Coasts at first and will then move quickly eastwards during the morning.”

A status yellow wind warning is in place for the remaining counties in the Republic of Ireland and it’s valid from 5am on 19 Wednesday until 5pm on the same day.

“Very windy across Ireland from early on Wednesday morning until evening. South to southwest winds will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65 km/hr with gusts of 90 to 110 km/hr, strongest in southern, western and northern coastal areas,” it states.

Regarding the counties in Ulster, the Met Office have said that an amber warning is in place from 8am on Wednesday until 5pm.

They state: “Storm Ali is expected to bring a very windy spell of weather with gusts of 65-75 mph inland.”
