Weather warning

Take note if you’re out and about.

Met Éireann has issued a new status yellow wind warning for Longford, Westmeath, Galway, Mayo, Roscommon and Clare.

The warning is valid from Friday, 4 October at 7am until 11am on the same day.

The warning states that “strong westerly winds will persist for a time this morning, mean speeds 50 to 65 km/hr with higher gusts” in those counties.

In terms of its impact so far, Storm Lorenzo has left thousands of homes and businesses without power. Areas on the west coast including Kerry and Galway have been the worst affected.

According to ESB Networks, a little under 4,000 individual faults have already been reported, though it is expected that a considerable number more will become apparent as the morning continues.

ESB Power Check have reported significant cases of outages near Castlebar, Westport and Limerick.

At present, Dublin Airport says that all flights out of the airport are operating as normal and were not affected by the storm.

As for today (Friday), strong west to southwest winds are expected this morning. Drivers are being told to be aware of fallen debris from trees and structures weakened by the passing storm.

The strongest winds will continue to be along the west coast as the day develops while winds will be light in the north and from an easterly direction there.

The winds are expected to ease off as the day goes on.

Tonight will see patchy outbreaks of drizzle and rain moving eastwards overnight.
