Met Éireann have issued a status orange snow and ice warning for three counties in Ireland.

The warning affects Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal and warns of an Atlantic depression crossing Ireland bringing with it a spell of snow on its northern flank.

It will be followed by scattered snow showers throughout the night and into Thursday.

The national forecaster said that at present, the main risk of appreciable accumulations is limited to Ulster.

The warning was issued at 10am on Wednesday and is valid from 6pm on Wednesday until 12pm on Thursday.

The Met Office currently have a yellow warning for snow and ice in place for the north of Ireland.

A huge number of schools are closed in the north today, with a list being available to view here.

As reported earlier, Met Éireann have also issued a status yellow wind warning for Munster, Leinster and Galway valid from 6pm on Wednesday until 2am on Thursday.

There is an increased risk of flooding in coastal areas due to the combination of the high seas, strong winds and the low pressure.
