Batten down the hatches.

As stated previously, the weather is set to take an unfortunate turn because there’s a status yellow rainfall warning in place for Munster, Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Galway and Mayo.

The warning was updated at 09:00 on 26 November and it’s valid from Tuesday 27 November at 02:00 until Tuesday 27 November 2018 at 14:00.

That particular warning states that heavy rainfall is expected later tonight (Monday) and for a time on Tuesday.

20-30mm is expected to fall over a short period, leading to some surface flooding. Higher totals are expected in mountainous areas.

To coincide with this, Met Éireann have also issued a status yellow wind warning for 16 counties. This particular warning is in place for Munster, Dublin, Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

An updated warning was issued this afternoon and it states that: “Southeasterly winds will strengthen tonight and during Tuesday morning. Mean speeds of 55-65 km/h with gusts from 90-110 km/h expected. Winds strongest along exposed coasts, where a few higher gusts are possible.”

With regards to the national forecast for Monday and Tuesday, here’s what’s expected.

Cold and mostly dry early on Monday night, away from the southwest.

Conditions will become very windy though with strong to gale force and gusty southeasterly winds developing.

Rain will spread up across much of the country overnight also, but the northeast should hold dry until day break.

Some heavy and possibly thundery falls are expected, especially in southern areas, with a risk of spot flooding. Temperatures down to between 2 and 6 C., early on, but values rising later.

As for Tuesday, it’s set to be a very wet and blustery start with some heavy rain and strong to gale force southeast winds developing in the morning. There’s potentially damaging gusts too.

The rain should clear gradually northeastwards, with the last of the rain easing from Ulster by evening.  The severe winds will moderate also.

However, another pulse of rain will edge into Munster during the evening and by Tuesday night, the rain in the southwest will extend north and eastwards through the country.

It will also become windy again overnight as southeast winds increase from fresh to strong. Winds will reach gale or strong gale force on coastal areas by dawn and some severe gusts are likely to develop in exposed regions.

Take care if you’re out and about.
