Met Éireann issues weather warning for five counties

Windy stuff.

Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow wind warning for five counties in Ireland.

The warning, issued on Monday at 1pm, affects Donegal, Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Kerry.

The weather forecaster warned of northwesterly winds today and tonight which will reach mean speeds of 50 to 65km/h with gusts of 90 to 110km/h. The winds will be strongest in coastal areas.

The warning came into effect at 2pm on Monday and will remain in place until 7am on Tuesday morning.

The rest of this week and, indeed, the conclusion of 2020 is set to be a cold one with temperatures in the low single digits during the day and dropping below zero during the night.

Tonight will be cold with snow and sleet falling on higher ground, while there frost and ice in sheltered areas, particularly in the east of the country.

Tuesday will be cold and blustery with the chance of some sleet and snow showers in mountainous areas, but these will mainly fall as rain in other areas. Tuesday night will be very cold and frosty with scattered wintery showers in the north and west.

Temperatures overnight on Tuesday will fall to between -3 and +2 degrees.
